1:6 A man came, sent from God, whose name was John. 7 1:7 He came as a witness 8 to testify 9 about the light, so that everyone 10 might believe through him. 1:8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify 11 about the light. 1:9 The true light, who gives light to everyone, 12 was coming into the world. 13 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was created 14 by him, but 15 the world did not recognize 16 him. 1:11 He came to what was his own, 17 but 18 his own people 19 did not receive him. 20 1:12 But to all who have received him – those who believe in his name 21 – he has given the right to become God’s children 1:13 – children not born 22 by human parents 23 or by human desire 24 or a husband’s 25 decision, 26 but by God.
1:14 Now 27 the Word became flesh 28 and took up residence 29 among us. We 30 saw his glory – the glory of the one and only, 31 full of grace and truth, who came from the Father. 1:15 John 32 testified 33 about him and shouted out, 34 “This one was the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than I am, 35 because he existed before me.’” 1:16 For we have all received from his fullness one gracious gift after another. 36 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but 37 grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ. 1:18 No one has ever seen God. The only one, 38 himself God, who is in closest fellowship with 39 the Father, has made God 40 known. 41
1:19 Now 42 this was 43 John’s 44 testimony 45 when the Jewish leaders 46 sent 47 priests and Levites from Jerusalem 48 to ask him, “Who are you?” 49
