1:3 The Lord is slow to anger 1 but great in power; 2
the Lord will certainly not 3 allow the wicked 4 to go unpunished.
He marches out 5 in the whirlwind and the raging storm;
dark storm clouds billow like dust 6 under his feet. 7
1:4 He shouts a battle cry 8 against the sea 9 and makes it dry up; 10
he makes all the rivers 11 run dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither; 12
the blossom of Lebanon withers.
1:5 The mountains tremble before him, 13
the hills convulse; 14
the earth is laid waste 15 before him,
the world and all its inhabitants 16 are laid waste. 17
1:6 No one can withstand 18 his indignation! 19
No one can resist 20 his fierce anger! 21
His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire,
boulders are broken up 22 as he approaches. 23
1:7 The Lord is good 24 –
indeed, 25 he is a fortress 26 in time of distress, 27
and he protects 28 those who seek refuge 29 in him.
1:8 But with an overwhelming flood 30
he will make a complete end of Nineveh; 31
he will drive 32 his enemies into darkness.
