11:17 Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please allow us⁹ to pass through your land.” But the king of Edom rejected the request.¹⁰ Israel sent the same request to the king of Moab, but he was unwilling to cooperate.¹¹ So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

11:19 Israel sent messengers to King Sihon, the Amorite king who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, “Please allow us to pass through your land to our land.”¹² 11:20 But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. He¹³ assembled his whole army,¹⁴ camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.

14:14 He said to them,

“Out of the one who eats came something to eat;

out of the strong one came something sweet.”

They could not solve the riddle for three days.

20:45 The rest²¹ turned and ran toward the wilderness, heading toward the cliff of Rimmon. But the Israelites²² caught²³ five thousand of them on the main roads. They stayed right on their heels²⁴ all the way to Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
