1:11 So they put foremen 9 over the Israelites 10 to oppress 11 them with hard labor. As a result 12 they built Pithom and Rameses 13 as store cities for Pharaoh. 1:12 But the more the Egyptians 14 oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread. 15 As a result the Egyptians loathed 16 the Israelites, 1:13 and they 17 made the Israelites serve rigorously. 18 1:14 They made their lives bitter 19 by 20 hard service with mortar and bricks and by all kinds of service 21 in the fields. Every kind of service the Israelites were required to give was rigorous. 22
1:15 The king of Egypt said 23 to the Hebrew midwives, 24 one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 25 1:16 26 “When you assist 27 the Hebrew women in childbirth, observe at the delivery: 28 If it is a son, kill him, 29 but if it is a daughter, she may live.” 30 1:17 But 31 the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live. 32
1:18 Then the king of Egypt summoned 33 the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live?” 34 1:19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew 35 women are not like the Egyptian women – for the Hebrew women 36 are vigorous; they give birth before the midwife gets to them!” 37 1:20 So God treated the midwives well, 38 and the people multiplied and became very strong. 1:21 And because the midwives feared God, he made 39 households 40 for them.
1:22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “All sons 41 that are born you must throw 42 into the river, but all daughters you may let live.” 43
83:4 They say, “Come on, let’s annihilate them so they are no longer a nation! 44
Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more.”
83:5 Yes, 45 they devise a unified strategy; 46
they form an alliance 47 against you.
105:25 He caused them 48 to hate his people,
and to mistreat 49 his servants.
A song of ascents. 51
129:1 “Since my youth they have often attacked me,”
let Israel say.
129:2 “Since my youth they have often attacked me,
but they have not defeated me.
129:3 The plowers plowed my back;
they made their furrows long.
