4:11 The mighty lion 1 perishes 2 for lack of prey,
and the cubs of the lioness 3 are scattered.
4:12 “Now a word was secretly 4 brought 5 to me,
and my ear caught 6 a whisper 7 of it.
4:13 In the troubling thoughts 8 of the dreams 9 in the night
when a deep sleep 10 falls on men,
4:14 a trembling 11 gripped me – and a terror! –
and made all my bones shake. 12
4:15 Then a breath of air 13 passes 14 by my face;
it makes 15 the hair of my flesh stand up.
4:16 It stands still, 16
but I cannot recognize 17 its appearance;
an image is before my eyes,
and I hear a murmuring voice: 18
4:17 “Is 19 a mortal man 20 righteous 21 before 22 God?
Or a man pure 23 before his Creator? 24
4:18 If 25 God 26 puts no trust in 27 his servants 28
and attributes 29 folly 30 to his angels,
4:19 how much more to those who live in houses of clay, 31
whose foundation is in the dust,
who are crushed 32 like 33 a moth?
4:20 They are destroyed 34 between morning and evening; 35
they perish forever 36 without anyone regarding it. 37
4:21 Is not their excess wealth 38 taken away from them? 39
They die, 40 yet without attaining wisdom. 41
