Now when the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they summoned the Sanhedrin 3 – that is, the whole high council 4 of the Israelites 5 – and sent to the jail to have the apostles 6 brought before them. 7 5:22 But the officers 8 who came for them 9 did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, 10 5:23 “We found the jail locked securely and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, 11 we found no one inside.” 5:24 Now when the commander 12 of the temple guard 13 and the chief priests heard this report, 14 they were greatly puzzled concerning it, 15 wondering what this could 16 be. 5:25 But someone came and reported to them, “Look! The men you put in prison are standing in the temple courts 17 and teaching 18 the people!” 5:26 Then the commander 19 of the temple guard 20 went with the officers 21 and brought the apostles 22 without the use of force 23 (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people). 24
5:27 When they had brought them, they stood them before the council, 25 and the high priest questioned 26 them, 5:28 saying, “We gave 27 you strict orders 28 not to teach in this name. 29 Look, 30 you have filled Jerusalem 31 with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood 32 on us!”
