Yohanes 1:15

1:15 John testified about him and shouted out, “This one was the one about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’”

Yohanes 5:14

5:14 After this Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “Look, you have become well. Don’t sin any more, lest anything worse happen to you.”

Yohanes 10:33

10:33 The Jewish leaders replied, “We are not going to stone you for a good deed but for blasphemy, because 10  you, a man, are claiming to be God.” 11

sn John refers to John the Baptist.

tn Or “bore witness.”

tn Grk “and shouted out saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant is English and has not been translated.

tn Or “has a higher rank than I.”

tn Since this is a prohibition with a present imperative, the translation “stop sinning” is sometimes suggested. This is not likely, however, since the present tense is normally used in prohibitions involving a general condition (as here) while the aorist tense is normally used in specific instances. Only when used opposite the normal usage (the present tense in a specific instance, for example) would the meaning “stop doing what you are doing” be appropriate.

tn Or “the Jewish authorities”; Grk “the Jews.” Here again the phrase refers to the Jewish leaders. See the notes on the phrase “Jewish people” in v. 19 and “Jewish leaders” in vv. 24, 31.

tn Grk “answered him.”

tn Or “good work.”

sn This is the first time the official charge of blasphemy is voiced openly in the Fourth Gospel (although it was implicit in John 8:59).

10 tn Grk “and because.”

11 tn Grk “you, a man, make yourself to be God.”
