Isaiah 5:8

Disaster is Coming

5:8 Those who accumulate houses are as good as dead,

those who also accumulate landed property

until there is no land left,

and you are the only landowners remaining within the land.

Isaiah 13:14

13:14 Like a frightened gazelle

or a sheep with no shepherd,

each will turn toward home,

each will run to his homeland.

Isaiah 14:19

14:19 But you have been thrown out of your grave

like a shoot that is thrown away.

You lie among the slain,

among those who have been slashed by the sword,

among those headed for the stones of the pit, 10 

as if you were a mangled corpse. 11 

Isaiah 14:21

14:21 Prepare to execute 12  his sons

for the sins their ancestors have committed. 13 

They must not rise up and take possession of the earth,

or fill the surface of the world with cities.” 14

they will settle in it through successive generations.

Isaiah 38:18

Isaiah 56:11

56:11 The dogs have big appetites;

they are never full. 24 

They are shepherds who have no understanding;

they all go their own way,

each one looking for monetary gain. 25 

Isaiah 60:21

60:21 All of your people will be godly; 26 

they will possess the land permanently.

I will plant them like a shoot;

they will be the product of my labor,

through whom I reveal my splendor. 27 


tn Heb “Woe [to] those who make a house touch a house.” The exclamation הוֹי (hoy, “woe, ah”) was used in funeral laments (see 1 Kgs 13:30; Jer 22:18; 34:5) and carries the connotation of death.

tn Heb “[who] bring a field near a field.”

tn Heb “until the end of the place”; NASB “until there is no more room.”

tn Heb “and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.”

tn Or “like a gazelle being chased.” The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

tn Heb “his people” (cf. KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV) or “his nation” (cf. TEV “their own countries”).

tn Heb “like a shoot that is abhorred.” The simile seems a bit odd; apparently it refers to a small shoot that is trimmed from a plant and tossed away. Some prefer to emend נֵצֶר (netser, “shoot”); some propose נֵפֶל (nefel, “miscarriage”). In this case one might paraphrase: “like a horrible-looking fetus that is delivered when a woman miscarries.”

10 tn Heb “are clothed with.”

11 tn Heb “those going down to.”

12 tn בּוֹר (bor) literally means “cistern”; cisterns were constructed from stones. On the metaphorical use of “cistern” for the underworld, see the note at v. 15.

13 tn Heb “like a trampled corpse.” Some take this line with what follows.

13 tn Or “the place of slaughter for.”

14 tn Heb “for the sin of their fathers.”

15 sn J. N. Oswalt (Isaiah [NICOT], 1:320, n. 10) suggests that the garrison cities of the mighty empire are in view here.

17 tn Heb “and he causes the lot to fall for them.” Once again the pronominal suffix (“them”) is feminine plural, referring to the birds mentioned in v. 15b or to all of the creatures listed in vv. 14b-15 (all of which are identified with feminine nouns).

18 tn Heb “and his hand divides for them with a measuring line.” The pronominal suffix (“them”) now switches to masculine plural, referring to all the animals and birds mentioned in vv. 11-15, some of which were identified with masculine nouns. This signals closure for this portion of the speech, which began in v. 11. The following couplet (v. 17b) forms an inclusio with v. 11a through verbal repetition.

19 tn Heb “will possess it” (so NIV); NCV “they will own that land forever.”

21 tn Or “For” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT).

22 tn The negative particle is understood by ellipsis in this line. See GKC 483 §152.z.

25 sn Although Abraham and Sarah are distant ancestors of the people the prophet is addressing, they are spoken of as the immediate parents.

26 tn Heb “one”; NLT “was alone”; TEV “was childless.”

27 tn “Bless” may here carry the sense of “endue with potency, reproductive power.” See Gen 1:28.

28 tn Heb “and I made him numerous.”

29 sn The phrase never full alludes to the greed of the leaders.

30 tn Heb “for his gain from his end.”

33 tn Or “righteous” (NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NAB “just.”

34 tn Heb “a shoot of his planting, the work of my hands, to reveal splendor.”
