Ulangan 28:23-24

28:23 The sky above your heads will be bronze and the earth beneath you iron. 28:24 The Lord will make the rain of your land powder and dust; it will come down on you from the sky until you are destroyed.

Ulangan 28:1

The Covenant Blessings

28:1 “If you indeed obey the Lord your God and are careful to observe all his commandments I am giving you today, the Lord your God will elevate you above all the nations of the earth.

1 Raja-raja 17:1

Elijah Visits a Widow in Sidonian Territory

17:1 Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As certainly as the Lord God of Israel lives (whom I serve), there will be no dew or rain in the years ahead unless I give the command.”

Ayub 37:13

37:13 Whether it is for punishment for his land,

or whether it is for mercy,

he causes it to find its mark.

Amos 4:7-8

4:7 “I withheld rain from you three months before the harvest.

I gave rain to one city, but not to another.

One field 10  would get rain, but the field that received no rain dried up.

4:8 People from 11  two or three cities staggered into one city to get 12  water,

but remained thirsty. 13

Still you did not come back to me.”

The Lord is speaking!

tc The MT reads “Your.” The LXX reads “Heaven will be to you.”

tn Or “heavens” (also in the following verse). The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “indeed.”

tn Heb “commanding”; NAB “which I enjoin on you today” (likewise in v. 15).

tn Heb “before whom I stand.”

tn Heb “except at the command of my word.”

tn Heb “rod,” i.e., a rod used for punishment.

tn This is interpretive; Heb “he makes find it.” The lightning could be what is intended here, for it finds its mark. But R. Gordis (Job, 429) suggests man is the subject – let him find what it is for, i.e., the fate appropriate for him.

sn Rain…three months before the harvest refers to the rains of late March-early April.

10 tn Heb “portion”; KJV, ASV “piece”; NASB “part.” The same word occurs a second time later in this verse.

11 tn The words “people from” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

12 tn Heb “to drink.”

13 tn Or “were not satisfied.”
