The Feeding of the Five Thousand

14:13 Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, ¹  they followed him on foot from the towns. ²

18:12 What do you think? If someone ³  owns a hundred ⁴  sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go look for the one that went astray? ⁵ 

Matius 21:15

21:15 But when the chief priests and the experts in the law ⁶  saw the wonderful things he did and heard the children crying out in the temple courts, ⁷  “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant

¹ tn The word “it” is not in the Greek text but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

² tn Or “cities.”

³ tn Grk “a certain man.” The Greek word ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo") is used here in a somewhat generic sense.

⁴ sn This individual with a hundred sheep is a shepherd of modest means, as flocks often had up to two hundred head of sheep.

⁵ sn Look for the one that went astray. The parable pictures God’s pursuit of the sinner. On the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd, see John 10:1-18.

⁶ tn Or “and the scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

⁷ tn Grk “crying out in the temple [courts] and saying.” The participle λέγοντας (legontas) is somewhat redundant here in contemporary English and has not been translated.
