18:5 So the king of Israel assembled 400 prophets and asked them, “Should we attack Ramoth Gilead or not?” ¹  They said, “Attack! God ²  will hand it over to the king.”

18:11 All the prophets were prophesying the same, saying, “Attack Ramoth Gilead! You will succeed; the Lord will hand it over to the king!”

28:5 The Lord his God handed him over to the king of Syria. The Syrians ³  defeated him and deported many captives to Damascus. ⁴  He was also handed over to the king of Israel, who thoroughly defeated him. ⁵

28:21 Ahaz gathered riches ⁶  from the Lord’s temple, the royal palace, and the officials and gave them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help.

34:17 They melted down the silver in the Lord’s temple ⁷  and handed it over to the supervisors of the construction foremen.”

¹ tn Heb “Should we go against Ramoth Gilead for war or should I refrain?”

² tn Though Jehoshaphat had requested an oracle from “the Lord” (יְהוָה, yÿhvah, “Yahweh”), the Israelite prophets stop short of actually using this name and substitute the title הָאֱלֹהִים (ha’elohim, “the God”). This ambiguity may explain in part Jehoshaphat’s hesitancy and caution (vv. 7-8). He seems to doubt that the 400 are genuine prophets of the Lord.
