Ceritera mengenai Ehud ini berlatar belakang sbb: Orang Moab sudah melangkahi anak sungai Arnon dan menduduki "dataran Moab". Mereka juga sudah menyeberangi sungai Yordan, sebab raja mereka berkediaman di Yerikho (Kota Pohon Korma). Dengan demikian orang Moab sudah berada di wilayah suku Benyamin. Perambatan Moab tsb berhubungan dengan kemerosotan suku Ruben pada awal zaman para Hakim. Penyusun kitab Hakim tidak banyak menambah pada ceritera asli. Tangannya terasa dalam Hak 3:12,15 dan Hak 3:30. Ia memakai sebuah ceritera yang mungkin beredar di Gilgal, Hak 3:19. Dengan senang hati dan tanpa penilaian moril ceritera ini mengisahkan akal yang dipakai Ehud, orang Benyamin. Hak 3:27-29 memperluas kegiatan Ehud sehingga merangkum seluruh Israel. Ini ditambah pada ceritera asli.
