19:15 Firman TUHAN kepadanya: "Pergilah, kembalilah ke jalanmu, melalui padang gurun ke Damsyik, dan setelah engkau sampai, engkau harus mengurapi Hazael menjadi raja atas Aram. 19:16 Juga Yehu, cucu Nimsi, haruslah kauurapi menjadi raja atas Israel, dan Elisa bin Safat, dari Abel-Mehola, harus kauurapi menjadi nabi menggantikan engkau. 19:17 Maka siapa yang terluput dari pedang Hazael akan dibunuh oleh Yehu; dan siapa yang terluput dari pedang Yehu akan dibunuh oleh Elisa.

Allah menyuruh Elia mengurapi Elisa untuk menjadi penggantinya. Perhatikan bahwa yang diurapi untuk jabatannya bukan hanya raja dan imam, tetapi juga nabi. Elisa bertugas untuk

  1. (1) melayani Elia,
  2. (2) menolong Hazael (raja Aram) dan Yehu (raja Israel) untuk mengalahkan musuh-musuh Allah (ayat 1Raj 19:16-17), dan
  3. (3) memberitakan firman Allah kepada kaum sisa yang benar (ayat 1Raj 19:18). Pelayanan Elia dan Elisa meliputi jangka waktu 75 tahun (875-800 SM, sepanjang masa pemerintahan Ahab, Ahazia, Yoram, Yehu, Yoahas, dan Yoas).
