Yefta yang riwayatnya dimuat di sini adalah seorang "Hakim kecil". Sebab tentang dia disajikan catatan sama seperti tentang "hakim-hakim kecil" lain: mengenai keluarganya, Hak 11:1-2; mengenai zaman tampilnya dan tempat kuburnya, Hak 12:7. Tetapi mengenai Yefta beredar sebuah ceritera yang menggambarkannya sebagai penyelamat yang mirip dengan "Hakim-hakim besar". Kata pendahuluan ceritera itu, Hak 10:6-18, sangat diperluas oleh penyusun kitab Hakim, sehingga serupa dengan Hak 2:6-19. Pada kisah mengenai perang pembebasan dengan orang Amon, Hak 11:1-11,29,32-33, ditambah catatan buatan penyusun kitab mengenai pesan yang disampaikan Yefta kepada raja orang Amon, Hak 11:12-28, dan juga ceritera tentang nazar Yefta, Hak 11:30-31,34-40. Akhirnya masih ditambah juga sebuah ceritera mengenai bentrokan antara suku Efraim dengan kaum Gilead, Hak 12:1-6.

Kisah mengenai Jeftah itu penuh makna. Jeftah adalah kepala gerombolan, tetapi seorang jang setia pada agama Jahwe. Sesungguhnja ia tidak mengertinja dengan baik2. Ia mempersembahkan puterinja sebagai sebagai kurban kepada Jahwe, hal mana dilarang dengan keras oleh agama Jahudi. Tetapi Jeftah menganggap itu sebagai kewadjibannja terhadap Allah dan, betapapun beratnja, ia mau setia. Dalam kisah ini muntjullah pula suatu usaha untuk mentjiptakan suatu keradjaan. Tjeritera itu achirnja memuat tradisi2 jang kuno sekali (beberapa mungkin mengenai hal jang sama) dari marga Gile'ad, suku Gad jang daerahnja diseberang Jarden.
