Israel gagal memiliki negeri itu sepenuhnya dan mengusir sama sekali orang Kanaan karena dua alasan.

  1. 1) Mereka menginginkan keuntungan dan kemakmuran yang diperoleh dari kerja paksa dan upeti orang-orang Kanaan. Berkompromi dalam kehendak Allah demi kemudahan dan uang berarti menabur benih-benih kemurtadan bagi masa depan (bd. Hak 1:21,27-29; 2:11-13).
  2. 2) Beberapa orang Kanaan dengan "kereta besi" mereka (ayat Yos 17:16-18; Hak 1:19) memiliki perlengkapan senjata yang lebih unggul dari orang Israel yang tidak dapat mereka kalahkan dengan kekuatan sendiri. Mereka mulai kehilangan kepercayaan kepada kuasa Allah mereka untuk mengalahkan musuh mereka (bd. Mazm 20:7-9).
