18:1 Maka dalam tahun ketiga zaman Hosea bin Ela, raja Israel, Hizkia, anak Ahas raja Yehuda menjadi raja. 18:2 Ia berumur dua puluh lima tahun pada waktu ia menjadi raja dan dua puluh sembilan tahun lamanya ia memerintah di Yerusalem. Nama ibunya ialah Abi, anak Zakharia. 18:3 Ia melakukan apa yang benar di mata TUHAN, tepat seperti yang dilakukan Daud, bapa leluhurnya. 18:4 Dialah yang menjauhkan bukit-bukit pengorbanan dan yang meremukkan tugu-tugu berhala dan yang menebang tiang-tiang berhala dan yang menghancurkan ular tembaga yang dibuat Musa, sebab sampai pada masa itu orang Israel memang masih membakar korban bagi ular itu yang namanya disebut Nehustan. 18:5 Ia percaya kepada TUHAN, Allah Israel, dan di antara semua raja-raja Yehuda, baik yang sesudah dia maupun yang sebelumnya, tidak ada lagi yang sama seperti dia. 18:6 Ia berpaut kepada TUHAN, tidak menyimpang dari pada mengikuti Dia dan ia berpegang pada perintah-perintah TUHAN yang telah diperintahkan-Nya kepada Musa. 18:7 Maka TUHAN menyertai dia; ke manapun juga ia pergi berperang, ia beruntung. Ia memberontak kepada raja Asyur dan tidak lagi takluk kepadanya.

Setelah mengisahkan kejatuhan Samaria dan kerajaan utara, penulis melanjutkan dengan sejarah Yehuda (kerajaan selatan) dimulai dengan pemerintahan Raja Hizkia yang baik. Ia dianggap sebagai salah seorang raja terbesar Yehuda karena kepercayaan dan ketergantungannya pada Allah. Hizkia sangat mempercayai Allah, memelihara perintah-perintah Allah (ayat 2Raj 18:3-6), dan mendorong umat itu untuk meninggalkan dosa dan kembali kepada Allah (2Taw 30:6-9). Pada permulaan pemerintahannya ia memperbaiki dan menyucikan Bait Suci, memulihkan para imam dan suku Lewi kepada pelayanannya dan menegakkan perayaan Paskah kembali (2Taw 29:3; 2Taw 30:5). Dengan penuh semangat ia berusaha untuk membinasakan semua mezbah berhala dan bukit pengorbanan di Yehuda (ayat 2Raj 18:4).
