Para pengikut Kristus kadang-kadang disebut "Israel milik Allah" (Gal 6:16) -- yaitu, yang bergumul dengan Allah. Allah tidak ingin umat-Nya bersikap pasif, tetapi ingin agar mereka sungguh-sungguh mencari-Nya untuk memperoleh berkat dan kasih karunia dari-Nya (Mat 5:6; Mat 6:33; 7:7-8; 11:12; Luk 11:5-10).

Kisah yang aneh yang pasti berasal dari tradisi Yahwista ini menceritakan tentang Yakub dan Allah yang beradu kekuatan. Pergumulan itu mula-mula tampaknya dimenangkan Yakub. Setelah menyadari bahwa lawannya bukan manusia biasa melainkan tokoh ilahi, maka Yakub menuntut dari padaNya berkat. Kitab suci sendiri di sini mencegah diri dari menyebut nama TUHAN. Lawan Yakub itu juga tidak mau memberitahukan namanya. Pengarang suci memanfaatkan sebuah ceritera kuno guna menerangkan asal-usul nama Pniel yang menurut pengarang berasal dari kata peni'el, artinya: wajah Allah. Melalui kisah ini pengarang mau menjelaskan juga asal-usul nama Israel. Dan dengan demikian pengarang memberi ceriteranya suatu makna keagamaan: Moyang Israel tidak mau melepaskan Allah dan memaksa dari padaNya sebuah berkat yang mewajibkan Allah terhadap semua orang yang setelah Yakub mangkat menyebut dirinya dengan namanya Israel. Dengan demikian peristiwa itu kemudian dapat diartikan sebagai ibarat pergumulan batin dan berhasilnya doa yang dipanjatkan kepada Allah dengan tekun (Hieronimus, Origenes).

Nama "Israel", yang kuat, secara kerakyatan diterangkan sebagai: ia yang telah kuat melawan Allah. Penggantian nama Yakub dengan nama Israel, sekali lagi diceriterakan dalam Kej 35:10, dan nas ini kiranya lebih tua usianya dari Kej 32:28. Adalah mungkin bahwa penggantian nama itu mengungkapkan bahwa ada suku yang berbeda-beda, yaitu suku Yakub dan suku Israel: suku-suku itu kemudian bergabung menjadi satu, bdk Kej 33:20: Allah Israel ialah El.
