78:20 Memang, Ia memukul gunung batu, sehingga terpancar air dan membanjir sungai-sungai; tetapi sanggupkah Ia memberikan roti juga, atau menyediakan daging bagi umat-Nya?" 78:21 Sebab itu, ketika mendengar hal itu, TUHAN gemas, api menyala menimpa Yakub, bahkan murka bergejolak menimpa Israel, 78:22 sebab mereka tidak percaya kepada Allah, dan tidak yakin akan keselamatan dari pada-Nya. 78:23 Maka Ia memerintahkan awan-awan dari atas, membuka pintu-pintu langit, 78:24 menurunkan kepada mereka hujan manna untuk dimakan, dan memberikan kepada mereka gandum dari langit; 78:25 setiap orang telah makan roti malaikat, Ia mengirimkan perbekalan kepada mereka berlimpah-limpah. 78:26 Ia telah menghembuskan angin timur di langit dan menggiring angin selatan dengan kekuatan-Nya; 78:27 Ia menurunkan kepada mereka hujan daging seperti debu banyaknya, dan hujan burung-burung bersayap seperti pasir laut; 78:28 Ia menjatuhkannya ke tengah perkemahan mereka, sekeliling tempat kediaman itu. 78:29 Mereka makan dan menjadi sangat kenyang; Ia memberikan kepada mereka apa yang mereka inginkan. 78:30 Mereka belum merasa puas, sedang makanan masih ada di mulut mereka; 78:31 maka bangkitlah murka Allah terhadap mereka: Ia membunuh gembong-gembong mereka, dan menewaskan teruna-teruna Israel.

Ini sebuah renungan seseorang yang berhikmat tentang sejarah umat Israel, bdk Yes 63:7 dst; Maz 105:1-45; 106:1-48; 114:1-8; 136:1-26; Wis 16:1-18:25. Pesajak memikirkan keluaran umat dari Mesir, Maz 78:11-14, perjalanannya di padang gurun, Maz 78:15-53, masuknya ke negeri Kanaan dan hidupnya di situ di zaman para Hakim sampai dengan raja Daud, Maz 78:54-72. Renungan itu disajikan oleh karena memang wajib memelihara dan meneruskan tradisi, Maz 78:1-7, sebagai pengajaran bagi keturunan nenek moyang, supaya keturunan itu jangan menempuh jalan kedosaan yang sama. Sebab sama dengan tradisi Ulangan, pemazmur menekankan bahwa sejarah umat Israel itu ialah: Allah berbuat baik bagi umat, tetapi umat terus-menerus mendurhaka, Maz 78:8-10. allah tiap-tiap kali menghukum, tetapi juga tiap-tiap kali mengasihani umatNya. Yang pertama-tama disalahkan pemazmur (dari kalangan Yehuda) ialah suku Efraim, Maz 78:9-10, artinya: kerajaan utara, asal usul bangsa Samaria yang bermusuhan dengan bangsa Yahudi. Sebaliknya, kepilihan suku Yehuda dan keturunan Daud sangat ditonjolkan, Maz 78:68-72. Dalam hal ini Maz 78 sejalan dengan kitab Tawarikh.

Ia memandang sedjarah bangsa Israil, pengungsiannja dari Mesir (Maz 78:11-14), perdjalanannja dipadang gurun (Maz 78:15-53), masuknja kedalam negeri Kena'an dan hidupnja disana pada masa para Hakim dan Sjemuel sampai tampilannja radja Dawud (Maz 78:54-72). Pengarang berbuat demikian oleh karena hadits itu adalah wadjib bagi umat Israil (Maz 78:1-7). Isi seluruh sedjarah itu ialah: Tuhan berbuat baik terhadap umatNja, malahan berbuat mudjidjat, tetapi umat itu terus menerus mendurhaka dan murtad daripada (Maz 78:8-10). Sebenarnja Allah tiap² kali menghukum mereka, tetapi tiap² kali menjajanginja pula.

Chususnja suku² bangsa Efraim dan Jusuf dituduh pengarang (Maz 9:1-20; 67:1-7), sedangkan Juda dipudjinja (Maz 68). Agaknja ia sendiri termasuk suku bangsa ini dan ia ingat bagaimana Israil (keradjaan utara) kemudian murtad sama sekali. Lagu ini menjerupai Maz 105:1-106:48.
