Penglihatan tentang dua keranjang buah ara

24:1 Lihatlah, TUHAN memperlihatkan kepadaku dua keranjang buah ara berdiri di hadapan bait TUHAN. Hal itu terjadi sesudah Nebukadnezar, raja Babel, mengangkut ke dalam pembuangan Yekhonya bin Yoyakim, raja Yehuda, beserta para pemuka Yehuda, tukang dan pandai besi dari Yerusalem dan membawa mereka ke Babel. 24:2 Keranjang yang satu berisi buah ara yang sangat baik seperti buah ara bungaran, tetapi keranjang yang lain berisi buah ara yang jelek, yang tak dapat dimakan karena jeleknya. 24:3 Lalu berfirmanlah TUHAN kepadaku: "Apakah yang kaulihat, hai Yeremia?" Maka jawabku: "Buah ara! Buah ara yang baik itu sangat baik, dan buah ara yang jelek, yang tak dapat dimakan karena jeleknya." 24:4 Kemudian datanglah firman TUHAN kepadaku, bunyinya: 24:5 "Beginilah firman TUHAN, Allah Israel: Sama seperti buah ara yang baik ini, demikianlah Aku akan memperhatikan untuk kebaikannya orang-orang Yehuda yang Kubawa dari tempat ini ke dalam pembuangan, ke negeri orang-orang Kasdim. 24:6 Maka Aku akan mengarahkan mata-Ku kepada mereka untuk kebaikan mereka, dan Aku akan membawa mereka kembali ke negeri ini. Aku akan membangun mereka, bukan meruntuhkannya; Aku akan menanam, bukan mencabutnya. 24:7 Aku akan memberi mereka suatu hati untuk mengenal Aku, yaitu bahwa Akulah TUHAN. Mereka akan menjadi umat-Ku dan Aku ini akan menjadi Allah mereka, sebab mereka akan bertobat kepada-Ku dengan segenap hatinya.

Latar belakang sejarah perumpamaan dua keranjang buah ara ini ialah awal pemerintahan Zedekia. Raja Nebukadnezar baru saja membawa Yekhonya dan banyak orang Israel lainnya ke Babel (597 SM). Zedekia dan mereka yang masih tinggal telah luput dari hukuman Allah; karena itu mereka menganggap bahwa nubuat-nubuat Yeremia mengenai kebinasaan total tidak benar. Perumpamaan Yeremia mengingatkan bahwa orang yang tertinggal di Yerusalem akan mengalami hukuman yang lebih dahsyat daripada mereka yang sudah dibawa ke dalam pembuangan di Babel.

Keranjang pertama (yaitu, para tawanan tahun 597 SM) dipandang berisi buah ara yang sangat baik, baik dalam arti bahwa Allah akan memurnikan mereka melalui penderitaan dalam pembuangan (ayat Yer 24:5). Setelah pembuangan mereka akan dibawa kembali ke negeri mereka (ayat Yer 24:6) dan akan berbalik dari berhala kepada Allah dengan sepenuh hati (ayat Yer 24:7); Allah akan memakai mereka untuk melaksanakan rencana penebusan-Nya di dalam dunia.
