Kisah ini barangkali berasal dari tradisi kenabian. Ia tidak mempunyai hubungan dengan kisah berikutnya. Daud memang diurapi menjadi raja di Hebron oleh orang suku Yehuda, 2Sa 2:4, dan kemudian oleh para tua-tua Israel, 2Sa 5:3. Pengurapan yang disebut dalam bab 16 ini tidak tersinggung di lain tempat. Menurut 1Sa 17:28 dan kendati 1Sa 16:13, Eliab ternyata tidak tahu-menahu tentang pengurapan ini. Sama seperti bab 9 sehubungan dengan kisah mengenai Saul, demikianpun dengan kisah mengenai Saul, demikianpun ceritera ini menjadi semacam pendahuluan bagi kisah mengenai "naik takhta Daud".
