Yeremia terus mengungkapkan kepedihannya atas umat Allah yang memberontak serta penolakan mereka untuk bertobat dan dengannya lolos dari kemusnahan yang akan datang. Ia ingin menangis, tetapi kesedihannya terlalu dalam untuk air mata. Teriakan tentang kutukan, tuduhan bersalah, dan peringatan tentang hukuman yang tidak terelakkan diselang-selingi sepanjang pasal ini. Yeremia sering kali disebut "nabi yang menangis" (bd. Yer 14:17), ia menangis siang dan malam untuk umat yang terlalu keras hati sehingga tidak menyadari dekatnya malapetaka mereka; karena perasaan sedih yang amat hebat, secara tradisional Yeremia dianggap penulis kitab Ratapan

(lih. Pendahuluan kitab Ratapan).
