Sekitar tahun 735/734 SM raja Israel dan raja Aram menyerang Yehuda. Raja Ahas diberi tahu oleh Yesaya agar percaya Allah untuk kelepasan. Namun Ahas menolak untuk menerima tawaran Allah akan sebuah tanda ajaib, ia malah meminta bantuan Asyur (lih. 2Raj 16:5-18; 2Taw 28:16-21). Sekalipun demikian Allah tetap memberi tanda kepada seluruh rumah Daud ini -- lahirnya Imanuel (ayat Yes 7:13-17). Walaupun serbuan Aram-Israel akan gagal, Allah kelak akan mengirim orang Asyur dan Babel untuk menghancurkan negeri itu.

Perang yang disinggung ayat ini ialah perang dengan negeri Yehuda yang dilancarkan raja Damsyik dan Samaria bersama, 2Ra 16:5-16, dengan maksud memaksa negeri Yehuda turut bersekutu melawan kerajaan Asyur. Kendati peringatan yang diberi nabi Yesaya, raja Yehuda, Ahas, minta tolong pada Tiglat Pileser. Raja Asyur itu menyerang Damsyik dan Samaria, tetapi menjadikan raja Ahas raja taklukan. Ahas sendiri membuka pintu negerinya bagi Asyur.
