7:4 Maka berangkatlah kira-kira tiga ribu orang dari bangsa itu ke sana; tetapi mereka melarikan diri di depan orang-orang Ai. 7:5 Sebab orang-orang Ai menewaskan kira-kira tiga puluh enam orang dari mereka; orang-orang Israel itu dikejar dari depan pintu gerbang kota itu sampai ke Syebarim dan dipukul kalah di lereng. Lalu tawarlah hati bangsa itu amat sangat. 7:6 Yosuapun mengoyakkan jubahnya dan sujudlah ia dengan mukanya sampai ke tanah di depan tabut TUHAN hingga petang, bersama dengan para tua-tua orang Israel, sambil menaburkan debu di atas kepalanya. 7:7 Dan berkatalah Yosua: "Ah, Tuhanku ALLAH, mengapa Engkau menyuruh bangsa ini menyeberangi sungai Yordan? supaya kami diserahkan kepada orang Amori untuk dibinasakan? Lebih baik kalau kami putuskan tadinya untuk tinggal di seberang sungai Yordan itu! 7:8 O Tuhan, apakah yang akan kukatakan, setelah orang Israel lari membelakangi musuhnya? 7:9 Apabila hal itu terdengar oleh orang Kanaan dan seluruh penduduk negeri ini, maka mereka akan mengepung kami dan melenyapkan nama kami dari bumi ini. Dan apakah yang akan Kaulakukan untuk memulihkan nama-Mu yang besar itu?" 7:10 Lalu berfirmanlah TUHAN kepada Yosua: "Bangunlah! Mengapa engkau sujud demikian? 7:11 Orang Israel telah berbuat dosa, mereka melanggar perjanjian-Ku yang Kuperintahkan kepada mereka, mereka mengambil sesuatu dari barang-barang yang dikhususkan itu, mereka mencurinya, mereka menyembunyikannya dan mereka menaruhnya di antara barang-barangnya. 7:12 Sebab itu orang Israel tidak dapat bertahan menghadapi musuhnya. Mereka membelakangi musuhnya, sebab mereka itupun dikhususkan untuk ditumpas. Aku tidak akan menyertai kamu lagi jika barang-barang yang dikhususkan itu tidak kamu punahkan dari tengah-tengahmu. 7:13 Bangunlah, kuduskanlah bangsa itu dan katakan: Kuduskanlah dirimu untuk esok hari, sebab, demikianlah firman TUHAN, Allah Israel: Hai, orang Israel ada barang-barang yang dikhususkan di tengah-tengahmu; kamu tidak akan dapat bertahan menghadapi musuhmu, sebelum barang-barang yang dikhususkan itu kamu jauhkan dari tengah-tengah kamu.

Dosa Akhan, dampaknya bagi Israel, dan hukuman keras atas Akhan dan keluarganya menyatakan berbagai prinsip hukuman ketika umat Allah berbuat dosa dengan terang-terangan.

1) Apabila terjadi dosa yang hebat, atau sikap membiarkan dosa yang hebat di kalangan umat Allah, maka berkat-Nya dapat berkurang, terhalang, atau hilang sama sekali. Allah tidak akan memberkati umat yang menolak untuk menyingkirkan dosa dari tengah-tengah mereka (ayat Yos 7:1,11-13,20-21,25; bd. 1Kor 5:1-13).
2) Dosa yang terang-terangan di tengah-tengah jemaat memperhadapkan anggota-anggotanya kepada pengaruh merusak dari musuh di luar (mis. Iblis dan dunia, ayat Yos 7:4-13).
3) Apabila dosa semacam itu dibiarkan dan tidak ditegur, maka pada akhirnya itu akan mendatangkan hukuman (ayat Yos 7:13). Akan tetapi, jika dosa itu disingkapkan, diakui, dan disingkirkan, maka berkat, kehadiran, dan kasih karunia Allah akan kembali (ayat Yos 7:22-26; Yos 8:1,18-19; bd. Kis 4:31-5:11).
4) Oleh karena itu, dosa di antara umat Allah harus diperhatikan dengan sungguh-sungguh. Kemurnian harus dijaga dan ketaatan harus dituntut; jikalau tidak, perkembangan rohani jemaat akan terhambat atau terhenti sama sekali (bd. Wahy 3:1-3,14-18).

Kebenaran ayat ini berlaku bukan saja untuk umat Allah secara keseluruhan, tetapi juga untuk masing-masing anggota. Dosa yang terus menerus dan tidak disesali dalam kehidupan seseorang akan memutuskan hubungannya dengan kasih karunia Allah. Orang-orang semacam itu tidak hidup di bawah pertolongan dan perlindungan Allah lagi dan tidak akan mampu bertahan menghadapi musuh-musuh jiwa mereka yang menyerang dan berusaha membinasakan mereka. Perbudakan kepada dosa dan kematian rohani akan menjadi akibatnya kecuali dosa disingkirkan (ayat Yos 7:13).
