Surat kiriman kepada orang-orang buangan di Babel

29:1 Beginilah bunyi surat yang dikirim oleh nabi Yeremia dari Yerusalem kepada tua-tua di antara orang buangan, kepada imam-imam, kepada nabi-nabi dan kepada seluruh rakyat yang telah diangkut ke dalam pembuangan oleh Nebukadnezar dari Yerusalem ke Babel. 29:2 Itu terjadi sesudah raja Yekhonya beserta ibu suri, pegawai-pegawai istana, pemuka-pemuka Yehuda dan Yerusalem, tukang dan pandai besi telah keluar dari Yerusalem. 29:3 Surat itu dikirim dengan perantaraan Elasa bin Safan dan Gemarya bin Hilkia yang diutus oleh Zedekia, raja Yehuda, ke Babel, kepada Nebukadnezar, raja Babel. Bunyinya: 29:4 "Beginilah firman TUHAN semesta alam, Allah Israel, kepada semua orang buangan yang diangkut ke dalam pembuangan dari Yerusalem ke Babel: 29:5 Dirikanlah rumah untuk kamu diami; buatlah kebun untuk kamu nikmati hasilnya; 29:6 ambillah isteri untuk memperanakkan anak laki-laki dan perempuan; ambilkanlah isteri bagi anakmu laki-laki dan carikanlah suami bagi anakmu perempuan, supaya mereka melahirkan anak laki-laki dan perempuan, agar di sana kamu bertambah banyak dan jangan berkurang! 29:7 Usahakanlah kesejahteraan kota ke mana kamu Aku buang, dan berdoalah untuk kota itu kepada TUHAN, sebab kesejahteraannya adalah kesejahteraanmu. 29:8 Sungguh, beginilah firman TUHAN semesta alam, Allah Israel: Janganlah kamu diperdayakan oleh nabi-nabimu yang ada di tengah-tengahmu dan oleh juru-juru tenungmu, dan janganlah kamu dengarkan mimpi-mimpi yang mereka mimpikan! 29:9 Sebab mereka bernubuat palsu kepadamu demi nama-Ku. Aku tidak mengutus mereka, demikianlah firman TUHAN.

Surat Yeremia kepada para buangan Yahudi yang tertawan tahun 597 SM, mungkin ditulis setahun atau dua tahun setelah mereka tiba di Babel. Yeremia memberikan mereka pengarahan berikut:

1) Mereka harus hidup secara normal, membangun rumah, menikah, dan mengusahakan kesejahteraan atau kemakmuran kota di mana Allah menempatkan mereka, karena mereka tidak akan kembali ke tanah perjanjian hingga genap 70 tahun (ayat Yer 29:7,10).
2) Mereka tidak boleh mendengarkan para nabi palsu yang meramalkan bahwa masa pembuangan itu akan singkat (ayat Yer 29:8-9).
3) Mereka yang tertinggal di Yerusalem akan menderita dengan hebat karena tetap memberontak terhadap Allah (ayat Yer 29:15-19).
4) Dua nabi palsu akan dibunuh karena hidup dalam perzinaan dan memalsukan Firman Allah (ayat Yer 29:21-23).
5) Pada akhir 70 tahun penawanan, kaum sisa itu akan sungguh-sungguh mencari Allah untuk pemulihan; Ia akan menjawab doa syafaat mereka karena rencana-rencana-Nya bagi mereka (ayat Yer 29:10-14).
