5:4 Sebab beginilah firman TUHAN kepada kaum Israel: "Carilah Aku, maka kamu akan hidup! 5:5 Janganlah kamu mencari Betel, janganlah pergi ke Gilgal dan janganlah menyeberang ke Bersyeba, sebab Gilgal pasti masuk ke dalam pembuangan dan Betel akan lenyap." 5:6 Carilah TUHAN, maka kamu akan hidup, supaya jangan Ia memasuki keturunan Yusuf bagaikan api, yang memakannya habis dengan tidak ada yang memadamkan bagi Betel.

Di dalam ratapan ini, Amos menyampaikan kesedihan Tuhan karena dosa-dosa Israel. Nyanyian ini mengatakan bahwa malapetaka mereka itu sudah pasti, seakan-akan sudah terjadi; namun Amos masih mengimbau umat itu untuk berbalik kepada Allah supaya sekurang-kurangnya "sisa-sisa keturunan" dapat diselamatkan (ayat Am 5:15).

Jikalau umat itu mau mencari Tuhan, sekelompok sisa dapat diselamatkan dari malapetaka yang dibicarakan Amos (lih. ayat Am 5:15). Di dalam hidup ini, mencari Tuhan setiap hari diperlukan untuk menerima kasih karunia dan kasih sayang-Nya. Saudara seharusnya khawatir jikalau mulai mengabaikan doa dan perenungan Firman Allah.

Berziarah ke tempat-tempat kudus dapat dikatakan "mencari Allah", bdk Ams 5:5; Ula 12:5; 2Ta 1:5. tetapi nabi Amos menegaskan bahwa "mencari Allah" yang sebenarnya berarti: mengusahakan yang baik dan menjauhkan yang jahat, Ams 5:14. Itulah yang membawa orang ke hidup sejati, Ams 5:4,6. Dalam nas-nas lain dari Perjanjian Lama ungkapan "mencari Allah" berarti: meminta petunjuk Tuhan (Ibraninya: darasy) dengan mengajukan pertanyaan 1Sa 14:41+, melalui seorang "abdi Allah", Kej 25:22; Kel 18:15; 1Sa 9:9; 1Ra 22:8, ataupun dengan "mencari firman", 1Ra 22:5; bdk Ams 14:5, baik dalam sebuah kitab, Yes 34:16, maupun dengan perantaraan seorang nabi, 1Ra 22:7. Ada sebuah ungkapan lain (yang biasanya memakai kata kerja Ibrani biqqesy) yang berkata tentang: "mencari wajah Tuhan", artinya: kehadiranNya, Hos 5:15; 2Sa 21:1 (Ibrani): 1Ta 16:11(=Maz 105:4); Maz 24:6; 27:8+. Agaknya dengan arti yang sama ungkapan itu dipakai dalam Zef 1:6; Hos 3:5; 5:6; Kel 33:7+, dll. Tetapi kedua ungkapan tsb hampir sama artinya: Orang mencari wajah Tuhan untuk mengetahui apa yang dikehendaki Tuhan dan kehadiran Allah kerap kali menjadi nyata melalui petunjuk yang diberiNya. Adapun "mencari Allah" itu dalam Perjanjian Lama merupakan perbuatan keagamaan yang dasari. Dalam Perjanjian Baru terdapat ungkapan yang sama artinya, yaitu: mencari Kerajaan Allah, Mat 6:33.
