Di Israel orang memang mempraktekkan "nekromansi" (ilmu wasitah; minta keterangan dan nasehat pada orang mati), 2Ra 21:6; Yes 8:19, meskipun terlarang oleh hukum Taurat, Ima 19:31; 26:6,27; Ula 18:11; 1Sa 28:9. Penulis cerita ini nampaknya sama seperti rakyat percaya bahwa hal semacam itu sungguh mungkin, walaupun ia menganggapnya terlarang. Para pujangga Gereja dan ahli ilmu tafsir berusaha menerangkan kejadian yang diceriterakan di sini. Ada yang berkala; Allah sendiri turun tangan; lain orang berpendapat bahwa Iblis berperan; lain lagi mengatakan bahwa perempuan itu menipu Saul. Dapat diterima bahwa kejadian itu agak serupa dengan apa yang terjadi di kalangan para berilmu wasitah: Saul menganut kepercayaan itu dan perempuan itu menipu. Tetapi Allah benar-benar mengizinkan Samuel menampakkan diri (karena itu perempuan itu terkejut melihatnya) untuk memberitahu masa depan. Bdk 1Ta 10:13 (LXX); Sir 46:20. Tetapi sebaik-baiknya dikatakan bahwa ceritera ini adalah ciptaan penulis yang dengan jalan itu kembali menyatakan bahwa Saul ditolak Allah dan diganti Daud. Ini memang pikiran pokok semua ceritera ini, bdk 1Sa 28:17 dengan 1Sa 15:18; Amalek yang disebut dalam 1Sa 28:18; dan lihat juga 1Sa 13:14,16:1; 23:17; 24:21; 25:30.
