13:4 Demikianlah seluruh orang Israel mendengar kabar, bahwa Saul telah memukul kalah pasukan pendudukan orang Filistin dan dengan demikian orang Israel dibenci oleh orang Filistin. Kemudian dikerahkanlah rakyat itu untuk mengikuti Saul ke Gilgal.

Bab 13-14 Seolah-olah akan menyajikan sejarah raja Saul. ada kata pendahuluan, 1Sa 13:1, dan ada kata penutup, 1Sa 14:47-52. Tetapi pada kenyataannya kedua bab ini hanya mengisahkan pembunuhan atas pasukan pendudukan (atau gubernur?) orang Filistin, balasan dari pihak orang Filistin dan pertempuran di Mikhmas yang hanya berlangsung satu hari saja. Bab 15-31 masih juga berbicara tentang masa pemerintahan raja Saul. Adapun bab 13 ini adalah majemuk juga. 1Sa 13:16-18 dan 1Sa 23 termasuk ke dalam ceritera kuno yang diteruskan dalam bab 14. 1Sa 13:7-15 berasal dari zaman kemudian. Selanjutnya penolakan Saul itu tidak tersinggung lagi. Rupanya ia mendahulukan isi bab 15.
