Whether it is for punishment ¹  for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. ² 

I thought this was a good idea, ¹  so I sent ²  twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.

Now select for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one per tribe.

However, Moses ¹  did not assign land as an inheritance ²  to the Levites; their inheritance ³  is the sacrificial offerings ⁴  made to the Lord God of Israel, as he instructed ⁵  them.

Pick three men from each tribe. I will send them out to walk through the land and make a map of it for me. ¹ 

They said to him, “Shut up! Put your hand over your mouth and come with us! You can be our adviser ¹  and priest. Wouldn’t it be better to be a priest for a whole Israelite tribe than for just one man’s family?” ² 

The Danites worshiped ¹  the carved image. Jonathan, descendant ²  of Gershom, son of Moses, ³  and his descendants ⁴  served as priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the exile.
