Lukas 2:44

2:44 but (because they assumed that he was in their group of travelers) they went a day’s journey. Then they began to look for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

sn An ancient journey like this would have involved a caravan of people who traveled together as a group for protection and fellowship.

tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

tn Or “and friends.” See L&N 28.30 and 34.17.

sn That is, in spite of Jesus’ instructions to the man to tell no one about the healing (v. 14).

tn The word “him” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

tn Or “confesses.”

tn Although this is a generic reference and includes both males and females, in this context “men” has been retained because of the wordplay with the Son of Man and the contrast with the angels. The same is true of the occurrence of “men” in v. 9.

sn This acknowledgment will take place at the judgment. Of course, the Son of Man is a reference to Jesus as it has been throughout the Gospel. On Jesus and judgment, see 22:69; Acts 10:42-43; 17:31.

10 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of Jesus’ comments about the temple’s future destruction.

11 tn Grk “asked him, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in English and has not been translated.

12 sn Both references to these things are plural, so more than the temple’s destruction is in view. The question may presuppose that such a catastrophe signals the end.

13 tn Grk “when.”

14 tn Or “and the scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 5:21.

15 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

16 tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

17 sn Their council is probably a reference to the Jewish Sanhedrin, the council of seventy leaders.

18 sn The figure of crying out to the mountains ‘Fall on us!’ (appealing to creation itself to hide them from God’s wrath), means that a time will come when people will feel they are better off dead (Hos 10:8).

19 sn An allusion to Hos 10:8 (cf. Rev 6:16).
