PERSIA [browning]
Suatu kerajaan yang luas, yang pernah mencakup sebagian Yunani dan menjangkau sampai ke India di sebelah timur. Kerajaan ini menyangkut orang-orang Yahudi karena kemenangan *Koresy atas orang Media (550 sM) dan ketetapannya yang mengizinkan orang-orang buangan Yahudi dari Israel kembali ke Yerusalem. Ketetapan ini diperbarui oleh *Darius I (Ezr. 5:1-15). Cerita Ester yang legendaris ditempatkan dalam masa pemerintahan *Ahasywero, atau Xerxes (Est. 1-2). Kerajaan Persia itu dihancurkan oleh *Aleksander Agung (¦ 330 sM). Orang Persia, yang dalam banyak tulisan-tulisan Yunani dipandang sebagai orang timur yang biadab, selalu dipandang baik-baik dalam PL.
Agama *Zarathustra (abad ke-7 sM) berasal dan berbasis di Persia. Kepercayaannya adalah bahwa Allah terang, Ahura Mazda, telah mengalahkan Ahriman (kegelapan) dan dualisme ini telah dipandang berpengaruh atas keyahudian, seperti juga tatanan kepercayaan *malaikat-malaikatnya berpengaruh atas Yudaisme. Agama ini bersikap toleran terhadap kepercayaan-kepercayaan lain. Dan Apollo Yunani dan Yahweh Yahudi adalah di antara ilah-ilah yang diakuinya.
